Hey everyone, and welcome to the very first post on ThemEDH!
I’m thrilled you’re here. If you’re anything like me, you love the creativity and endless possibilities of Magic: The Gathering’s Commander (or EDH) format. You enjoy building decks that tell a story, represent a cool character, or just explore a wacky idea. But maybe you also believe that having an awesome, fun, personalized Commander experience shouldn’t require spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on optimized staples or fancy mana bases?
If that sounds like you, then you’ve definitely found the right place!
So, What is ThemEDH All About?
The name itself is the core idea: this blog is all about Themed EDH. We’re diving deep into flavorful deckbuilding, prioritizing creative concepts and Vorthos goodness.
But there’s a little twist! It’s also Theme Digestible Homebrews. My goal here is to share:
- Theme: Decks built around a specific flavor concept – lore, characters, art, mechanics, you name it!
- Digestible: Clearly explained deck techs, breaking down card choices by function and why they fit the theme, presented in an easy-to-understand way.
- Homebrews: My own original deck ideas and brews, exploring fun synergies and interactions outside the usual competitive meta.
And underpinning all of this is our tagline and guiding principle: “Making fun decks where the prices are easy to swallow.”
The Plan & The “Why”
I’m Josh, a casual Magic player based in Portland, Oregon. Full disclosure: I genuinely enjoy the process of brewing and deckbuilding – digging through cards, finding hidden gems, making a theme work – Usually even more than playing ! I’m not a pro player or a rules expert; I’m an enthusiast who loves the puzzle.
I started ThemEDH because I wanted a space dedicated to celebrating creative, flavorful Commander decks that are truly accessible. We’ll be focusing primarily on decks built and tested around a $50 total budget cap (using TCGplayer Market prices at the time of posting). I believe strongly (especially for casual playgroups like mine) that you don’t need those super expensive lands or staples to have a unique, effective, and incredibly fun deck.
My commitment is also to “Battle Test” the main featured brews whenever possible. This means I’ll be buying the cards (thanks to the budget!), sleeving them up, and actually playing games to provide real feedback on how they perform. I’ll share those insights – what works, what doesn’t, and how it feels to pilot. Occasionally, I might share “Theory Brews” too – cool ideas still on the drawing board, which will always be clearly marked.
I also plan to revisit decks when new sets release, looking for exciting new budget cards that fit our themes!
Who Is This For?
This blog is for you if you:
- Love thematic or flavorful EDH decks.
- Are a budget-conscious player (or just want some cheaper deck options!).
- Enjoy brewing your own unique decks.
- Play primarily in casual or lower-power Commander pods.
- Appreciate creative deckbuilding challenges.
Let’s Build Something Cool!
I’m incredibly excited to share this journey with you. ThemEDH is all about sharing ideas and celebrating the creative, accessible side of Commander. Please feel free to join the conversation in the comments, suggest themes you’d like to see tackled on a budget, or share your own awesome brews!
What’s Next?
Stay tuned! The first official deck tech is already brewing – we’re braving the frozen expanse of Kaldheim to explore the power of Jorn, God of Winter // Kaldring, the Rimestaff. This deck leans hard into the theme, channeling Jorn’s connection to the wild to untap your icy resources for explosive turns, while Kaldring’s Rimestaff offers resilience by recurring key snow permanents from the graveyard’s chill. Expect plenty of snow-covered lands, thematic creatures, and synergistic spells that tell Jorn’s story, all while staying true to our $50 budget philosophy.
Update: check out the Theory Brew: Building a Budget Jorn Snow Deck now.
Thanks for stopping by, and happy brewing!
