Hey everyone, welcome back to ThemEDH! Today, we’re stepping into the brewing lab with our first “Theory Brew”. This is where I share exciting deck concepts that fit our thematic, $50 budget goals but haven’t hit my physical table for battle-testing just yet. Consider these blueprints and starting points – I’d love your feedback on them!
Our first theoretical journey takes us to the frigid realms of Kaldheim to explore Jorn, God of Winter // Kaldring, the Rimestaff.

Jorn himself embodies the harsh beauty and resilience of winter, a master tracker connected to the wild snows. The plan? To lean hard into the Snow theme, using Jorn’s incredible ability to untap all our snow permanents when he attacks, turning our icy mana base into a powerful engine. On the flip side, Kaldring offers invaluable recursion, letting us bring back key snow pieces from the graveyard’s chill.
This brew aims to capture Jorn’s story and the feel of Kaldheim’s frozen expanse. Based on current pricing (around late April 2025), the entire deck clocks in at approximately $47, staying true to our $50 budget philosophy! Let’s unpack this blizzard of value!

Capturing Jorn’s Story: Thematic Pillars
Before diving into the functions, let’s talk about the flavor. The goal wasn’t just to build a snow deck, but to build Jorn’s deck, reflecting his story and connection to Kaldheim:
1. Snow as the Core Identity: As the God of Winter, Snow permanents are essential. We’ve prioritized Snow lands and included spells that rely on or synergize with them (Blizzard Brawl, Blessing of Frost, Ascendant Spirit, Into the North, Dead of Winter, Coldsteel Heart, Moritte of the Frost). This aligns mechanics with Jorn’s very nature.
2. Jorn the Pathfinder & Naturalist: We wanted cards reflecting Jorn’s knowledge of the wilds. Into the North, Track Down, and Explorer's Scope represent finding paths. Scry effects (Hakka), top-card peeking (One with the Multiverse, Explorer's Scope), and finding lands (Path of Discovery, Spirit of the Aldergard) evoke his foresight and observation. Trailblazer's Boots hints at his ability to traverse harsh terrain.
3. Animal Companionship: Jorn prefers the company of animals. The deck includes potential companions like Anara, Wolvid Familiar and Druid's Familiar for protection, birds like Pilfering Hawk and Hakka as scouts, and other thematic wildlife like Owlbear Cub, Owlbear, Spirit of the Aldergard, and Ohran Frostfang.
4. Kaldheim’s Essence: We aimed to capture the plane’s feel. Including Jorn and his brother Alrund, God of the Cosmos grounds us in the pantheon. Magical beings like Ascendant Spirit and Moritte of the Frost, alongside frost/winter spells, represent the plane’s inherent magic.
5. Weather Manipulation
: Spells like Blizzard Brawl, Bitter Chill, Blustersquall, and Dead of Winter primarily function as control but also evoke Jorn’s connection to winter storms and freezing cold.
Deck Breakdown by Category
The Commander(s): Jorn & Kaldring
The heart of the deck. Jorn aims to attack ASAP to untap our snow permanents (especially lands!) for massive mana advantage. Kaldring provides crucial resilience, allowing us to cast snow cards from our graveyard, making our key pieces frustratingly hard to keep down.
Ramping into the Blizzard (Ramp)
We’re heavy on snow lands because Jorn turns them into rituals. We supplement this with snow-specific ramp like Into the North and Coldsteel Heart, standard budget rocks (Arcane Signet, the Signets), land search (Farseek), and potential value ramp from Explorer's Scope. I have to admit, I’m particularly excited about Explorer's Scope in this deck! It feels like the perfect home for a card I always see sitting in my bulk box, just waiting for a chance to shine. The synergy with Jorn wanting to attack anyway just seems fantastic on paper. We also use the snow-token generating Replicating Ring.
Drawing Through the Snowstorm (Card Draw)
Keeping the hand full is vital. We use snow payoffs (Pilfering Hawk, Graven Lore), combat damage triggers (Ohran Frostfang), ETB/utility draw (Owlbear, Spirit of the Aldergard finds a land, Icewind Elemental loots), selection (Strategic Planning, Track Down), and the flavorful powerhouse Alrund.
Creatures of the Cold
Includes thematic snow payoffs (Ascendant Spirit), animal companions (Anara, Druid's Familiar), utility (Rime Tender), Kaldheim wildlife (Owlbear, Spirit of the Aldergard), a snow clone (Moritte), and creatures that control the board via tapping (Frost Lynx, etc.).
Controlling the Expanse (Interaction)
Leaning into the theme, we use numerous tap/freeze effects (Bitter Chill, Encase in Ice, Icebind Pillar, etc.) to neutralize threats temporarily. For permanent removal, we have flexible options like Return to Nature and Ravenform, targeted creature shutdowns like Deep Freeze, anti-flying tech (Downdraft), and the unique Ice Cave for conditional counterspells. I’m honestly really curious and excited to see how Ice Cave plays out – it feels like a unique, political piece that could lead to some interesting table dynamics! Blizzard Brawl offers cheap, potentially indestructible removal if we have a creature on board.
Wiping the Slate Clean (Board Wipes)
Dead of Winter leverages our high snow permanent count for a potentially one-sided or very effective wipe. Blood on the Snow is a powerful reset that crucially also brings back Jorn (or another key creature/planeswalker) thanks to its recursion clause, synergizing perfectly with our snow mana.
Rising from the Grave (Recursion)
Primarily handled by Kaldring, the Rimestaff bringing back our essential snow permanents. Blood on the Snow offers a powerful one-shot recursion effect post-wipe.
Potential Win Conditions
How does this deck *theoretically* win? Through combat damage using Jorn’s mana advantage to deploy and protect threats like a grown Ascendant Spirit or Ohran Frostfang-enhanced creatures; by grinding out value via card draw and Kaldring’s recursion; or by assembling the 20/20 Marit Lage token via Marit Lage's Slumber.
Meeting the Budget (Approx. $47.13)
Based on the prices listed earlier (sourced around late April 2025), this entire 100-card deck comes in at approximately $47.13, comfortably under our $50 ThemEDH target!
It’s worth noting that the single largest expense is the suite of 24 Snow-Covered basic lands, totaling around $19!
Outside of the snow basics, the most impactful individual prices are the excellent draw engine Ohran Frostfang ($3.31), the crucial protection/evasion from Trailblazer's Boots ($2.61), the snow ramp of Into the North ($1.38), and the snow mana rock Coldsteel Heart ($1.02). Everything else is remarkably affordable, with the vast majority of the deck consisting of commons and uncommons costing well under a dollar. This really shows that you can build a cohesive, synergistic, and thematic deck full of interesting cards without needing expensive staples. (Remember, prices always fluctuate, so double-check before buying!)
Call for Feedback!
Since this is a Theory Brew, I haven’t had the chance to battle-test it yet! What are your first impressions? Do the thematic includes feel right? Are there any budget snow gems or thematic includes for Jorn that I overlooked? Especially curious if anyone has thoughts on making Ice Cave work or other fun ways to use Explorer's Scope! Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
Conclusion
I’m really excited about this Jorn brew’s potential to be a flavorful, synergistic, and demonstrably budget-friendly snow deck. It feels very Kaldheim, leverages snow mechanics heavily, and includes some pet cards like Explorer's Scope I’ve been wanting to use! Seems like it could generate some serious mana and value, all for under $50. Hopefully, I’ll get to sleeve this up for a “Battle Tested” update in the future!
Thanks for stopping by ThemEDH, and happy brewing!
